COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Sept. 13, 2011 – The Colorado College Cultural Events Fund and music department present the London group Piano Circus in a concert of contemporary music for six grand pianos. The concert, which is free and open to the public, will be held at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 5 in Packard Hall, 5 W. Cache La Poudre St., on the Colorado College campus.
Piano Circus was formed in 1989 to perform Steve Reich's seminal minimalist classic “Six Pianos,” along with other works, on the concert circuit. The group’s six pianists have a broad range of experience, from traditional western classical music to jazz, pop and rock, African and Asian traditional music, improvisation and composition. Between them the members of Piano Circus work in collaboration with film and video makers, theater and circus performers, dancers and choreographers, and in a variety of educational settings.
In its 22 years of tours, workshops and commissions, Piano Circus has created a repertoire of over 100 works; the majority of which were written for the ensemble by the likes of Kevin Volans, Brian Eno, Louis Andriessen, Erkki-Sven Tüür, Terry Riley and Stephen Scott, whose new work, Mr. Fibonacci at Work and Play, will be premiered on the concert.
The concert will combine The Bowed Piano Ensemble, directed by Scott, with the six London musicians. This collaboration will continue in 2012 when the Bowed Piano Ensemble goes to London. Piano Circus has released seven CDs with Decca and three on its own label; the latest release is 2009’s Skin & Wire, featuring drummer Bill Bruford. The Bowed Piano Ensemble's recordings are on the New Albion and Albany labels.
